In an aircraft like the F-5E, apart from published departure and arrival procedures, are you guys navigating NTTR primarily with landmarks/pilotage? Or are you using tacans for cross radials for area navigation?

In an aircraft like the F-5E, apart from published departure and arrival procedures, are you guys navigating NTTR primarily with landmarks/pilotage? Or are you using tacans for cross radials for area navigation?
Last time I looked at an MDC for F-5 flying, they were using TACAN Radial/Distance for waypoints.
We use both, depending on type of flight and weather.
Personally I prefer looking out the ol’ window when I can and use Tacan as cross reference. So in MDC we write up waypoints with Tacan ref.
