Named for William H. Seward, Secretary of State, who put together a treaty with the Russians that was ratified by the Senate in 1867 (yes?). Known as "Seward's Folly" to the Repulicans, the treaty bought over 550,000 square miles for next to nothing. Ironically, despite its incredible riches Alaska wasn't made a state until _______.
