What does the news report about N Korea?

Here in Holland the news reports that N Korea has claimed they threaten to attack targets at Guam, Hawaii, South Korea and even the American Mainland.

Experts claim they do not have the capability to reach the US mainland with nukes according to the news.

South Korea want to restart their nuke program to show N Korea they are not afraid.

What do we think about All this? Is it a real threat? What do your news reporters say?
What if Russia will aid N Korea?

Yet another desperate plea for attention from a despot who starves and murders his own people. He is to be ignored.

Anything he decides to put on top of a Taepodong MRBM would't make it much farther than Japan before the SBX, AEGIS, and PAC-3 brought it down. And, well, if we miss and San Francisco gets nuked (please God, let it be San Francisco) then we'll manage to go on.

N Korea needs spanked again. Their new leader wants to saber-rattle to make nice with the military leaders (who really run the country) to keep himself in power. Normally China will let it go on for a bit, then they will have a "chat" with him and it will go away.
In the meantime the news will make it bigger than it is to fear-monger for ratings.

There is a real danger this time, though small, as we have young, inexperienced leaders on both sides. There is a possibility for miscalculation, especially if they act/react faster than the U.S. or China can step in to quell the situation. For example, NK fires on that little island (forget the name atm) and Sk launches a strike back and it escalates.

So far as all the "we repudiate the truce" talk, this is what, the 3rd, 4th, time they've said that when they haven't felt they were getting enough attention? If they were to be stupid enough to come across the border in force, they might find the hard way that China is A: tired of dealing with their crap, and B: heavily invested in the U.S. and not as ready to back them up against it.

Normally NK uses the ruse of China holding them back, almost like a comedy routine of a chihuahua on a leash pretending to be a pit bull until the leash slips....... This time China has remained silent for the most part, and has even joined in on the sanctions (it has been reported that they have severely cut oil exports to NK in the past few days). NK doesn't seem to be taking the hint yet. It could also be that their "Fearless Leader" (yes Bullwinkle reference ) has talked himself into a corner, and China is taking their time stepping in and letting him save face to remind him of who the real boss is.

The estimated life expectancy of the ANK without Chinese intervention was about 72 hours when I was in the USAF back in the 80's. Given all the new technology I would imagine it is less now. If they did somehow manage to do a nuke strike, you can reduce that to 18 minutes or less. Back in the 50's the average ANK soldier really believed he was fighting for a new prosperity for Korea, now they have lived in the "prosperity" and despite the best efforts of the NK government, know what life is like in SK and would much prefer to have that. Quite a few also have family in SK. The best trained troops are still only as good as their motivation. Once the radicals and political officers are gone unit cohesion could collapse. This would also affect their capabilities, though it is not a predictable factor.

I am not losing any sleep over it.

Great Post - Really puts things in perspective. Underscores why I've learned to tune out most of what spews from the networks.

Here is the thing, if he launches anything at South Korea, Japan, or any other US assets the North will only last a few short weeks. The scary part is what Russia and/or China will do.

Nothing but maybe some diplomatic protests. After all they need good relations with the West more than with a tiny N.Korea.
