    Oculus is here

Got home and had the box waiting, going to set it up after breakfast. I'll try to produce a report at some point on my experience.

Interested to hear how you get on with it. Still have some doubts about it all myself.

I think we're still a few years away from being able to display at a high enough resolution and good enough frame rate but I'm definitely interested and think this will be the way most people fly sims in 5 years time.

Just saw Oculus teamed with Samsung to make a mobile wireless headset by plugging a Samsung Note 4 phone on the front. It is out in November. It's all in its infancy stage now but I'm with ya Howie...in 5 years I hope it's at least 8k resolution with at least 120 degree field of view.

I read that there won't be significant changes to the Oculus between the Dev2 version and retail.

If there aren't then it won't be viable for doing anything that involves finding anything that doesn't have glowing floating circles around it.

I will attempt to not engage in hyperbole here, but I'll admit it will be tough. This is just an initial report, I'll try to be a bit more scientific after spending more time with it.

The Oculus Rift is amazing. And I mean amazing. The videos on the web do no justice to the experience. All you've read about the resolution being too low are pretty spot on. Yet, there is absolutely no substitute for the sense that you are ACTUALLY IN THE COCKPIT.

This is not simply a "large screen" projected in front of you. It is completely 3 dimensional. You look left and right, and you want to reach out and touch things. You are REALLY in the aircraft. My Huey experience was the best so far, but even the A10 (with its low res) was amazing. In the Huey, when I look left, I want to touch my co-pilot.

Head Tracking: Flawless. To describe the difference between the OR and TrackIR is to describe the difference between circle and a sphere. With zero calibration.

Again, just initial impressions, nothing scientific here. But seriously guys... I wasn't expecting the 3D to be this good. This is not like watching a 3D movie, if you've done that. You are seriously inside of the pit. After flying for 3 minutes, I forget that it's not real.

    Simply amazing. Seriously.

Thanks for that initial report Dojo. I'm really excited for this piece of hardware, and it's great to hear from somebody who has one, and not just the manufacturers.

I think this will a huge step up in the simulation experience. I can't wait to get my rig up and running again.......and eventually get the OR too.
