    ILS landings

    Question for you guys.

When I call ATC and announce my intention for inbound and ATC replies with heading a range lets say 255 for 30. Is there a way to accurately gage the distance? I see the airport on the hud but that WP is the airport and its not at 255.

    Thanks for the help!

The best way to gauge the distance is using tacan. I'm not sure if the airport charts are in the public release section of downloads. But if they are they have all the approach plates for each air port and for the ones that have ils. If you can download I would def recommend shooting approaches and getting familiar on how to do them. The HUD is just as accurate in its on way but I'm not sure if it is in the same position as the tacan station on the field. You will not be using the HUD for reference of distance to the airfield when shooting an instrument approach. You will be using the DME. But generally you can use the HUD to quick reference the distance.

Charts are in the public section.

The sim ATC will direct you to a point 5 or 10 miles (I forget the exact distance) from the runway so that if you turn to final approach course you'll fly a long straight in approach.

Of course being DCS ATC it's not very good at it, so really your best bet is to ignore the sim ATC entirely (we do) and fly the approach yourself. The best approach types to use are either visual into the overhead break or, in the absence of approach charts (or understanding of them) is a straight in ILS/TACAN approach.
