Oh but the 580 is out of the question. It doesn't fit and it is power hungry in relation to the 680. So it'll be the latter if I get a different vidcard.
Now I have to find a way to convince my wife that shelling out almost 500 for a vidcard is really neccessary! :P
Any tips?

Hehe, I am afraid she is much smarter than that!
BTW: I have a socket 775 Asus Maximus 2 Gene motherboard with a PCI-E 2.0 interface, whereas the 680 has PCI-E 3.0 in its specs. Is that backward compatible to lower interface versions or do you need to have a PCI-E v3.0 mobo as well?

Yes it can be in a 2.0 interface. But your bottleneck is the max data speed trough 2.0. But it is not a big deal with the games of this moment. And what i mean with a mid range card: Nvidia has made this card for the mid range:P and still its better than the high end cards now a days.
Thanks! Well it certainly isnt priced as a midrange card!

And I see its a 2 slot rather than a three slot card. So the 580 is available in a 2-slot version as well. I didn't know that.
Perhaps it would be wiser to look for a cheaper 580 then instead of shelling out the dough for a 680 which cant run at full speeds anyway because of my system... Choices.. choices...

Or buy a 680 and you're save in the future on that part! And upgrade later to a new socket etc.

Yeah but you see there lies the problem; if you buy a computer today it is outdated tomorrow.
Lets say I want to upgrade my pc next year, who's to say the 680 won't be mid range by then and I would buy a current gen card in the new setup anyway? Dilemma!
