    UHF Procedure Question

Been brushing up on the basics and I have a question about the use of the UHF radio.

We are to use the UHF tower freqency to communicate with other players to make calls when taxiing, etc. My understanding is the last transimission we will make after take off is at 30 miles to announce our departure from their airspace.

My question is are we supposed to be monitoring guard after take off, but before hitting 30 miles out, or only after we have made that final call at 30 miles?

I rotate the knob the BOTH, and monitor Guard continuously. Outside of an ELT beeper going off, I can't think of a reason not to be monitoring Guard at all times.

If you're brushing up on basics I'd suggest reading the OIs again.

    Operating Instruction 476-01, paragraph 2.2
"UHF equipped aircraft will monitor UHF guard at all times

    Operating Instruction 476-01, Page 9
"At 20 miles from the airfield for visual departures, flight lead will broadcast on Ground/ATC channel “[AIRFIELD] [FLT CALLSIGN], DEPARTING YOUR AIRSPACE TO THE [CARDINAL DIRECTION].”

For SID departures you broadcast when crossing the departure waypoint.

Thanks Noodle and Snoopy. I got the distance on departure mixed up with the inbound at 30 miles. I also never picked up on the "Both" setting on the UHF radio.

Just goes to show that I'm not scared to ask the dumb questions.
