Um... NEVER useless... and moreover, this was exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate the separation of VMC states and IMC. That really sealed it for me.

Clever. I'm curious... How did he learn the elevation? Chart or did he literally just risk himself and fly a low approach?

He flew low to find the field visual, so he could get the mark on the runway.
The GPS is telling him the elevation (this was in 2003, 2nd GW).
Besides that, he still has the airport diagram. You still have that as a reference in case you wanna check.

Dont get me started on Mr. Hampton and his stories lol. I have a strong feeling he will be running for office one of these days as a politician. Deadliest F16 pilot in the USAF my ass!!

But Noodle hit it on the head as usual. And Ashy is also correct from what Ive read. Airfields like Bagram have tactical lighting systems that can only be seen with goggles just like the non modeled NVIS? system. To all other observers the airfield is lights out.

Yea it's really cool to watch the military do night approaches. I also had the opportunity to ride in a C-5 when a night approach was being done with no airport lighting and using goggles.

In his book "Viper pilot", Dan Hampton describes a situation where they have to land at Ali al-Salem, that has no IFV charts.
It's night. There's a sandstorm, with only a quarter mile visibility. There's 10 of them.
He flies to the airport, get's a markpoint on the beginning of the runway and communicates the L/L and elevation with all the others.
That point they use to get themselves on the ground.

Something like that can be done in DCS.
    That!
I did test it as well some time ago and it does work as Stuka wrote.
One wired thing is that the CDI on the HSI in not aligned even when you are on the perfect approach.
What I found out is that when you change Scale to 'Terminal' then your CDI on the HSI is exactly where it should be.
I tested it at Novorossiysk airfield.
Do any of you guys have an idea why the CDI is shifted to the side if Scale is not 'Terminal'?

The different modes make up how accurate the CDI is showing deviation.
I (wrongly) thought that approach was the most accurate. Out of your findings, it looks like terminal is the best used in that case.

Then again, never needed the whole thing in the first place, because we can always divert.
