Dissimilar aircraft and budy lasing
With several upcoming modules capable of trucking LGB's at high speed/altitude but without the ability to self designate, I wondered how often this method of weapons employment is used in real life?
Would the aircraft usually fly a dual role precision strike/escort profile?

We used that approach on Op Ellamy (Libya) with Tornados lasing bombs for Typhoon, both with mixed Tornado/Typhoon flights and flights of each cooperating in a package. The French also did the same in Afghanistan with mixed flights of Mirage/Rafale.

RAF Buccaneers also did this in the '91 Iraq war for the Tornado's before they got their own designators.

VF-102 was doing this for several different types of AC in Afghanistan back in 01.

This happens a lot, especially with British Jets.
If there isnt enough serviceable Targeting POD's to go around then buddy lase happens. its very rare a pair goes up with out at least one pod between them.
And it also happens from the ground.
If the aircraft is in a non-permissive environment, or the weather forces the aircraft above cloud then a guy on the ground will lase.

Widow, in the situation of say a CAS mission with clear weather, which is more effective, lasing with a/c or somebody lasing from the ground? Which would be the first choice?

By far the best choice in that situation is self lase form the A/C.
Purely because he has a better perspective, less chance of overspill which could cause the weapon to drop long of the target.
Once the A/C is tally he can maintain eyes on for a longer period depending on his orbit, where as the guy on the ground could be in contact and may not want to pull out a hefty LTD.
