Wedge Bomb Attacks and Variations During the Attack

In the discussion of the flight night operation on 01MAR16 a point was raised by Tex and I would like to get a discussion going to iron out the details for future flights.

During the flight Tex altered the wedge bomb attack pattern to get a better final attack heading on the target. Ideally this would have put more bombs on target as he would have been parallel and not perpendicular to the targets.

While I agree with this on one level I also disagree as well. Taking into account the targets we have on NTTR are non reactive and live target are; the live targets usually disperse during a "Non Training" evolution which will open the area of impact for the weapons being deployed.

Couple of questions to start off the discussion:
    1. Can we or should we adjust the attack pattern of the wedge bomb attack to ensure maximum effect on target?
    2. Are there any specific contracts or regulations that prevent a flight lead to change the briefed attack pattern during the ingress to the target?

    1. Yes. Effect on target should always drive your attack planning.

    2. No. But you should always have a good reason to deviate from any plan and not just do it on a whim. (For example unexpected enemy movement/additional information on target formation are good reasons).

Yes, at least that's the only publicly available reference to it, for now.

Adding, that is technically not the exact attack we are referring to, but it does work as an illustration for this topic.

My takeaways on these types of attacks are:
    • Effect on target
    • TOT coordination
    • Mutual Support during a Shooter/Shooter
    • Clean/Sanitized Egress

This is by no mean an exhaustive list.
