    When to use IR?

After the past flight night, I was wondering if using the IR pointer from the TGP during the day is normal procedure? It was great to use the rest of the procedures (standby point, standby pocket) to locate targets, but since my flight had difficulty with the location during that particular point, it got me wondering...

The IR pointer is used to visually acquire something being sparkled at night, with NVGs on of course.
What could happen is for example someone designating with the sparkle and u place your HUD target designator over said point (you can actually see the beam through the NVGs), make it your SPI, slave, fire your IR pointer and thus both parties involved can correlate the target designation and acquisition.

EDIT: In addition, you could in theory match the sparkle without even pointing your aircraft to the original sparkle. Instead you can just try to slew your beam manually onto target.

Thanks Kimi. I am aware of the use during the night flights. However, I'm still wondering if it is ever used RL during day flights?

I'm almost certain that it's a night only type of designation/mark.

IR pointer is only visible using NVGs which are only usable at night. The laser is usuable during day or night and can be acquired by the TGP. But for visually pointing out something during the day, you have to use the surrounding terrain and other visible features.
