LAS allows shooting from decreased slant range which is essential for sufficient penetration on a hard target.

HAS requires greater slant ranges because you need time and distance to complete the dive recovery.

Does the thinner armor on top of tanks negate the reduced bullet penetration capability? It depends (tm).

Target type, aspect, dive angle, slant range, and rounds fired all affect the answer.

Also, a two second burst is used in most tactical situations against a point target; a specific round count isn't really planned. In training, the goal is 100 rounds per event for scoring purposes.

And that sadly is why DCS and reality don't match. We don't have armour to deal with, just a higher hit point value. So for us, the number of rounds actually hitting the target is all that matters.

Hopefully one day that'll change, but we'll need to have mission and mobility kills as a thing before we have real armour values, punching through the hull armour of many modern MBTs isn't going to be easy, even for the GAU-8.

Obviously no data here but my IRL opinion (based on having worked on armoured vehicles) would be that from the rear a HAS would be better - most modern MBTs top rear deck armour and turret top armour is much much thinner than the front, plus there being more significant fittings and opening that preclude reinforcement and reactive armour.

From the front, especially on an MBT with a sloped front turret face HAS probably won't get you turret-top impacts unless you were really steep.

In DCS it's rounds on target that matter, since they arithmetically add up until the target goes bang, so none of the real-world considerations are important. The better delivery is the one that gets you more rounds on target for a given burst, which might favour LAS maybe...

Putting armor aside, aren't rounds' penetration capabilities in DCS dependant on round's speed? And by this I mean if rounds "hitpoint deduction" is dependant on the round's speed. If so, then LAS would definetely be the best option.

Not that I know of. In fact HEI is actually more effective that API against any target.
