Ever the improvisor Ed...
Fold a little piece of cardboard and put it between the clip and the headset and it should provide enough pushback for the clip to close.

I don't own one Oliver but the website claims that it works.
Oliver, I'm currently using this clip: http://swcproducts.com/listing/wirel...king-pro-clip/
It works perfectly with TIR, and about half of the price of a ProClip (here in the Netherlands it's even more expensive because of shipping costs, which are $39 excluding fees on top of the price of the ProClip...). PLUS it runs on batteries so it's wireless.
I'd assume the Delan Clip would also work with TIR, since basically all it needs is 3 IR lights to work.
I've just ordered another pair of these to replace a set with a broken cable (no fault of the headset itself, I mistreated it).

Found them for £40 here (I paid £65 originally) http://www.maplin.co.uk/p/hyperx-clo...FQEL0wodc7AOzA

TIR is a simple solution (you can refer to it half ass if you like)
What it does need, is IR LED's which goes from 0.5$ to 1$ a piece (preferred in inside 800-900nm range).
The only thing that makes TrackIR stand out is the software support in the games they have, compared to open / free software.
Other than that, considering you can modify a PC cam in to IR capture, still the TIR 120fps simply outpaces anything else
