We did some pretty exhaustive testing and (unless Oliver was leading me astray :P) everything was disabled. We checked specifically for other system sounds being routed back into the signal path.
Evidence of leakage was further supporter by the sound quality of the leaked signal, which was far below that of simple stereo mix being routed into the signal.

My onboard audio was acting screwy so I picked up a pair of these for £50 on Black Friday. They come with an external USB sound card with sound/mic volume buttons and 7.1 virtual surround sound. Solved my problem.
