    Trainers

So I've been thinking for a while about getting a trainer to use to refine my skills at just basic stuff. I'm having a really difficult time flying the F-5 right now. Especially with landings and just staying level in flight. I've found myself to reliant on the HUD and autopilot. So my question is, would I get any benefit from getting something like the Hawk to help me with the F-5, and the F/A-18 later down the road, with just becoming a much better pilot?

I haven't flown the F-5 but the hawk flight model isn't great. I wouldn't use that to attempt to train basic hands-on flying skills that you want to transfer to other aircraft.

What specific problems are you having or trying to work on?

If you fingers yourself relying on the hud for everything in the a10 and want to fly without it just turn it off in the arm panel.

I'm trying to fly without being so reliant on technology (HUD, steerpoints, etc). With the F-5 all navigation is done with Tacan. Which I can do fairly well, I just want to improve as much as I can. I've noticed with trying to fly the F-5 my skills in the A-10 has improved greatly. So I was just wondering if I got an actual trainer vs an airframe that more for combat use if it would be beneficial. Frodo, I didn't think about turning the HUD off that would help as well. But I have found myself a few time without a functional HUD on missions and have not felt as if I was struggling. But the F-5 feels as if it kicking my ass, and I'm spending so much energy and brain power just flying that thing that I don't know if I'm getting better at it.

The F-5 needs a lot of practice to fly well. Trim inputs have to be made frequently, particularly after take-off, and are much greater than those needed in the A10. Also make sure you keep a close eye on your fuel and ensure L and R groups are balanced as far as possible. From experience, trimming the aircraft is easier when you have internal fuel only and the lighter the aircraft the easier it is. As an aid, you can always turn your gunsight on and use the sight as a visual cue for maintaining straight & level flight.

As to landings, make sure you know your approach speed. With practice, you will get more familiar with the correct attitude for landing, the sink rates and where the runway needs to be. An entire flight spent in the circuit just practicing landings will help enormously.

So to give an update, the hawk was a bad idea. Mistakes were made. It does fly well though.
