    PC Disaster #572

So, there I was happily transferring my hardware across to the new case, all was going swimmingly. Everything installed, cables nice and tidy, everything looking all shiny.

A few system startups later, while windows was booting up for the first time after the rebuild there comes a flash of flame and smoke as my GPU made its way to silicon heaven.

After much swearing (seriously, I even invented some new words), I resigned myself to the fact that my faithful 980Ti is dead, and so the 1080 is on the way to be collected from the local Amazon pickup tomorrow.

I really am beginning to think PC hardware manufacturers are tapping my TS conversations and general musings, as soon as I say "I might look at upgrading XXX soon" said hardware decides to bloody die on me.

    It's a conspiracy!!

    P.S.
My living room still smell like dead silicon. It's mildly unpleasant.

Ouch. Sounds like a seating problem of the 980ti post transfer? Is the mobo OK or is that impossible to tell until the new card arrives?

Eddie, I know the feeling. Just last night, when our power got knocked out in a wind storm, I went to get a flashlight (torch) and the bloody door knob to the utility room wouldn't turn! Not locked but just poorly made and decided to break at that moment.

P.S. My GPU is a 980 also, sheesh.

The only status light that comes up is the GPU, otherwise it all powers on ok. But the only way to know for sure is when the new GPU arrives and I can get into the POST screen etc.

Did you ever consider leaving it to a professiona? As far as I remember, every case of you touching something on the inside of the pc, ended up with something being broken.

Sounds like an elaborate story to justify a new 1080...next time just tell us you really want a 1080 and youre going to get one...no need for the theatrics lol

Well, I'm not as broken up about the whole thing as I could have been if that's what you mean. But I was planning to wait for the 1080Ti.

But still. Hopefully I can RMA the 980Ti and sell it to recoup some of the cost of the 1080.

And I can still smell burnt silicon.

I take it you did verify you didn't fry your entire mainboard alongside the GPU by booting with the CPU's built-in GPU?

No such thing as a built in GPU on a Haswell/Broadwell chip. Only the mainstream Sky Lake/Kaby Lake etc. chips have those.

He's not running the Skylake platform, so no integrated GPU.
