IronHorse / New guy from Texas

Good morning all, and Happy New Year,

Thank you Roman for your training post in DCS, it lead me here.

I'm just getting into DCS and intend on building a rig dedicated to the Sim.
(I do not have a PC capable as of yet)
I have purchased the list below from DCS while the sale is running.
Any additional purchases you can recommend would be appreciated while I can get the discounts.

My initial thoughts are to focus on the A10C first and then the F/A 18C. I'm leaning toward VR as I've read a lot about it and it's realism.

While I obtain all the equipment needed my plan (advise with any thoughts please) is to study daily YouTube videos and manuals consistently. So in other words, I'm a fresh slate seeking the potters hands.

I've read a bit on the 476th Fighter Group.
I seek intense realism and pelage my commitment to the endeavor. (Not meaning to be presumptuous)
I'm not assuming I'll be accepted as member of the Wing, but that's the goal.

    Purchases Currently:

    A10C II Tank Killer

    F/A 18C Hornet

    Super Carrier

    Persian Gulf Map

Nevada Test & Trainings Range Map

A10C Iron Flag Part 1 Campaign

F/A 18 Rise of the Persian Loin Campaign

    Expected Build:

    Any thoughts would be appreciated.
I seek a fairly high end rig. I've never built a PC but can learn anything.

    HOTAS: A10C & FA18C
    Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog

    Thrustmaster warthog f18c stick

    MOTHERBOARD:
    MPG Z690 EDGE WIFI DDR4

    GRAPHIC CARD:
ASUS ROG Strix NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 V2

    RAM:
    G.SKILL TridentZ RGB Series 64GB (4 x 16GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3600 (PC4 28800) Desktop Memory Model F4-3600C16Q-64GTZR

    POWER SUPPLY: (is this enough?)
Corsair RM750X 80 PLUS Gold Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

    Hard Drives:
    WD_BLACK 500GB SN750 NVMe Internal Gaming SSD Solid State Drive - Gen3 PCIe, M.2 2280, 3D NAND, Up to 3,430 MB/s - WDS500G3X0C
    WD1000DHTZ Western Digital VelociRaptor 1TB,Internal,10000 RPM (3.5")

VR: . Need advice on this regarding the intended build performance
HP REVERB VR GEN 2 v1 VIRTUAL REALITY HEADSET G2 1G5U1AA#ABA

    Case:
Not selected yet so advice is welcomed

Very grateful in advance for any guidance.

    Very Respectfully,

    IronHorse

Hey IronHorse, welcome to the forums! Reverb G2 is a good headset for DCS. Given how unoptimized DCS is you will need at least a 3080 to run it on good frame rates though.

    Forgive my ignorance:
    3080 VS 3080 Ti
I notice the Ti has 12 mb vs 10mb on the 3080.
Is this significant? I'm thinking so.

That being said I can save significant $$$ with the 3080

    Grateful for your thoughts sir.

So when I upgraded from the 3080 to the 3080ti it wasn't really the framerate boost, but the improved smoothness inside the headseat that made a big differemce for me personally. I'm by no means on expert on the subject TBH. However, I can recommend VR4DCS, where there are dedicated threads on 3080-3080ti-3090 and also on the G2: https://discord.gg/GY2YKxnC

Take a look and ask around, plenty of knowledgeable people there.

The only wisdom I cam share that I've learnt with DCS over the year, that due to the age of the core code it behaves very different from the brand new titles that are usually reviewed by Youtubers when they are testing video cards and sharing benchmarks. Try to find benchmarks for Nvidia and AMD cards that were run on DCS. Also, DCS performs vastly different in 2D and in VR mode on the same rig.

You can also ask questions on our Discord, there are a number of guys who are more active there than in these forums.

    Thanks Karma,

Good info to know. I'm a fair way off from getting in the cockpit.
Trying to do this right the first time. (Or as close as one can get)
    Appreciate the advice.

Just read the first 100 pages of the manual.
I can see it's the first (of far too many) times I'll need to absorb it.

I'm targeting a six month go live due to costs and the learning curve.
I may be off on that timeline, but while I'm saving cash for gear, I figure I can do a lot of reading & video note taking.
    Trying to avoid RTFM LOL

I read "Chucks" manual and don't want to be the guy with an A10C sitting in my hard drive with dust on it because I wasn't willing to put in the time.

Howdy and welcome. As you start to take DCS seriously, I’d strongly encourage you to purchase a copy of Tacview to assist in debriefing. Great tool.

    Thanks Puma.

Exactly the type of suggestions I'm looking for.
