It’s certainly possible to fly exclusively in VR in the fighters with the exception, perhaps, of high intensity CAS missions. As Panther mentioned, you can manage by glancing at notes etc under the headset. For A/A missions and pre planned strikes etc. VR works well, especially if your memory is good enough to not need to glance at line up cards etc every few minutes.
The only time I’ve found myself having to pull the headset up to look at notes was when flying IFR approaches I’m not overly familiar with (due to not flying often enough these days). I think for me it’s as much down to what mood I’m in as anything else when it comes to choosing VR or monitor.
Except for the A-10C of course, as mentioned it really just doesn’t work well in VR at the moment. Hopefully the cockpit update will solve that.
