What Eddie said. Premiere elements is a nightmare, way too many limitations that are there only to push their main editing software suite. Never used sony vegas as in the professional world we are all about AVID/Final Cut/Premiere Pro but i heard a lot of good things about it.

I mainly use Blender : https://www.blender.org/
The UI is not really intuitive, but still, its open source, powerfull and free.
For the audio, I use Audacity ( http://www.audacityteam.org/ ).

This 3d shit is pretty neat. Managed to put a rough concept together in Blender. Decided to switch to 3d max before I get to far along.
